News report from the recent International Union of Marine Insurers, where Nordic-German ship classification DNV-GL has put the blame on the break-up and sinking of the MOL Comfort on Japanese ship classification society ClassNK which approved the ship’s design and construction specifications. Basically, the steel girders of the ship’s ribs weren’t strong enough, but the DNV-GL speaker also criticised ClassNK for the secretive way its investigation has been conducted ad contrasted that with the approach taken by authorities and class societies after the grounding of the MSC Napoli.
