Felixstowe digs in to be ready for more ULCVs

A report from the East Anglian Times says that the UK’s biggest container port at Felixstowe is planning to deepen the water alongside berths  6 & 7 at Trinity Terminal as well as raising the height of 10 ship-to-shore gantry cranes.

It follows the completion of the extension on berths 8 & 9 last year enabling the handling of two 18,000 plus teu ultra-large container vessels simultaneously.

On occasions in the past Felixstowe has struggled to cope with the often off-window arrival of several ULCVs at once.

With decisions pending on the UK hubs for two mega-alliances, when the new vessel sharing groupings start in April next year, the port’s owners Hutchison obviously want to be seen as proactive as they fight the DP World terminals at Southampton and London Gateway for the business.
