Australian shippers cry foul over liners' 'exorbitant' million-dollar charges
Australia’s Freight and Trade Alliance (FTA) has accused container carriers of extorting millions of dollars ...
The FTA has called on the UK and French government to maintain the current border controls at Calais, despite Brexit. After a truck driver was threatened with a chainsaw this week, the association stepped in to back a Home Affairs Select Committee report, which say the current agreement for UK border controls on French soil must stay in place. The UK does not have the necessary infrastructure, and any attempt to move border controls would result in major disruption and the possibility of queues of vessels lining up to dock.
“These checks [in France] are vital as lorry drivers are often threatened as they approach the French port and migrants slash curtain sides and prise open doors to stow away on their vehicles in an attempt to reach the UK,” said the FTA.
