Thanks to slow steaming, more efficient newbuilds and the increased use of low-sulphur fuel, harmful emissions from ships is calculated to have been 20% lower in 2012 than five years earlier in 2007. The progress made by shipping in reducing green house gas emissions was revealed to the United Nations Climate Summit in New York on Monday by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. The figures prepared by the International Maritime Organization are more impressive when it is considered that cargo carried by sea continues to grow.
