Since the fall of Hanjin, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) has been groomed by the South Korean government as the country’s principal flag-carrier, and today saw it sign up to the 2M Alliance. Dubbed by HMM chief executive Yoo Chang-Keun as “2M+H”, the alliance sees the carrier form a strategic agreement with Maersk and MSC. Unlike other shipping alliances, the 2M provides limited access to other members’ slot capacity, but HMM still expects the alliance to boost its cargo capacity by around 22% compared with when it was part of the G6 Alliance. Furthermore, it is expecting its US west coast traffic to shoot up by as much as 50%.
