This is part of a BBC investigation into the working and living conditions of truck drivers across Europe and, frankly, parts of it are utterly harrowing. It is to the freight industry’s shame that some of its key workers are on ridiculously low wages – if it cannot pay a driver more than €150 a month, then that job should probably not exist. The reality, of course, is that this a tale of exploitation; of the largest companies using their mighty buying power to force down costs to the extent that it is having a material impact on the people and subcontractors working for them. While Ikea is named here, other household-name stores are likely to find themselves in the firing line
