The founder of modern Singapore has passed away. Lee Kuan Yew was one of the most dominant Asian politicians in living memory and one that proved to be particularly instrumental in shaping the course of global supply chains. Named prime minister of Singapore in 1959, at the age of 35, he led it first to independence in 1963 and then presided over its development as one of the leading Asian Tigers, until he eventually stepped back from public life in 2011. There are few countries which have been so singularly shaped by one man and, given Singapore’s pivotal role in both international shipping and aviation, his life and its achievements resonate especially in the transport and logistics industry, as this obituary from The Daily Telegraph demonstrates.
