“If you can’t beat them, join them”, the old saying goes. And it looks like Lufthansa agrees, as it announced a (passenger) tie-up with former arch-enemy Etihad. And with Lufthansa Cargo betting on partnerships as the way forward (see ANA and United) while it reduces its freighter fleet, it would not now be so surprising if the pair started looking at a freight alliance. Of course, it’s not bad news for Etihad either. Competition among the Gulf carriers is pretty tough, and this could strengthen Etihad’s offering too. The news was followed by reports that the Abu Dhabi carrier will make a number of job cuts as it restructures its business, in the face of increased competition and weak demand, it said.  ATW reports.
