More security call as Maersk Lebu is boarded by pirates

Six reported piracy incidents last weekend involving commercial shipping in the Singapore Strait – including the boarding of the 7,450 teu Maersk Lebu – have prompted more calls for a permanent security presence in the region. The incidents take the total number of reports of piracy in the hotspot to 75 in 2015, with 27 in the past 10 weeks. UK-based specialist maritime operations company Dryad Maritime says patrols, similar to those deployed in the Gulf of Aden, need to be put in place to curb the attacks.
