With all the noise about London Gateway, the new deepsea container terminal development at Liverpool can sometimes be overlooked. Development of the facility, which will be able to service ships of up to 12,000teu, looked to have been thrown off course by delays during the winter, but now appears to be back on track. Port executives are pitching for cargo from or to Birmingham northwards that currently comes through southern ports. Liverpool is “smooth as silk”, said Atlantic Container Line chief executive Andrew Abbott, who added that the new terminal would reinforce the port’s position as the line’s UK hub.
