Here’s the paradox: no politician local to Heathrow is going to vote for its expansion, for fear of upsetting Nimbyist residents concerned about noise levels and air pollution. And no politician local to Heathrow is going to support the relocation of aviation activities to somewhere like “Boris Island” (except possibly Boris himself, egomaniac that he is), because hundreds of thousands of jobs would be lost, plunging one of the UK’s wealthiest areas – due to its proximity to the country’s largest airport – into an era of unprecedented unemployment. But things clearly can’t go on as they are.
