The informative Cathy Roberson has published a blog on the changing cargo flows of US ports. Not only did the west coast congestion boost the east coast, but there appears to be an eastern-led trend, owing to the markets served. This is likely to increase with the expansion of the Panama Canal – Boston Consulting and CH Robinson expect a 10% swing in volumes to east coast ports once it opens next year, although they say the west coast will keep East Asian export traffic.
