“Its massive social, economic and environmental impacts will be suffered by Nicaragua and its neighbouring countries, and it seems, with the little information available, that those impacts have not been properly assessed,” said one scientist at an independent workshop recently convened to study the forthcoming Nicaragua canal. It warns that one of the biggest worries is whether there will be enough water for the canal. The report, commissioned by canal developer China’s HKND Group, is said to amount to 14 volumes, but it has yet to be made public.
