There have been plenty of criticisms of the proposed Nicaragua canal from an economic standpoint, but now a group of scientists has begun to question the environmental impacts of the project. Chief amongst are the dramatic impact it could have on marine ecosystems and the possible damage to Lake Nicaragua, the country’s most important source of fresh water. The paper claims the canal will end its function as a source of drinking water and irrigation.
