German road transport and logistics group Dachser has promoted its head of contract logistics Alexander Tonn (pictured) as the new managing director of European logistics Germany.

Mr Tonn, 43, will be responsible for the business development of the 38 German branch offices in the European logistics business line, which includes overland transport and contract logistics for industrial goods.

He will take up his new position on 1 January 2017 and will report to Michael Schilling, chief operating officer of road logistics and deputy chairman of the executive board.

Mr Schilling said: “Dachser’s success is based on the entrepreneurship of our branch offices, combined with centralised network management that is designed for sustainable growth. Alexander is familiar with every aspect of our business and has all the expertise and skills needed to purposefully advance the European logistics Germany business unit and to generate growth in the German market.

“His position also involves particularly intensive cooperation with our Air & Sea Logistics organisation in order to plan and implement integrated supply chains for small and medium-sized companies with a view to Dachser Interlocking.”

Mr Tonn graduated with a business management degree and has been with Dachser since 1999. His career with the company began in controlling, and he went on to head up contract logistics at Memmingen – the company’s largest operations site worldwide.

He later additionally took on the position of head of freight forwarding and deputy branch manager. In 2014, he moved to Dachser’s head office, where he was responsible for further developing the warehousing and value-added services business, and he will continue to hold this position as corporate director of contract logistics.

Dachser’s road logistics business is divided into five units led by the following managing directors: Alexander Tonn at European logistics Germany; Alfred Miller at food logistics; Wolfgang Reinel at European logistics, North Central Europe; Frédéric Dumort at European logistics France & Maghreb; and Juan Quintana, European logistics Iberia.

The company said its road logistics operation posted revenues of roughly €4.2bn in 2015, with about €3.4bn coming from the European logistics business line.
