The future of the port of Auckland might have little material impact beyond the shores of New Zealand, but the discussion under way in the city says a lot about the relationship between freight and society in the 21st century. With mayoral elections in Auckland looming, a majority of the candidates argue that the entire port needs to be moved, rather than grant it permission to extend its facilities, as port authority figures have requested.
