The US is having a tough time of it in freight transport. Businessweek is warning that the railroads in Chicago are already concerned about this winter, following last week’s severe snowfall in New York. They are opening 24-hour command centres, installing heaters and looking at rerouting and contingency options. Chicago is the epicentre of the rail system – one quarter of all US freight passes through it and the six biggest railroads interconnect there.
